My tiny shop.
Around the start of 2021 I decided that I wanted to have a place to do some woodwork. In the past I have made use of my dad’s tool shed, my schools’s shop, or visted shared makerspaces. For a few years I didn’t have easy access to any of those and wanted to have something at home that is all mine. I also found that my philosophy had changed.
I was first attracted to woodworking from the design aspect. I didn’t understand why people were interested in building things to published plans. I was interested in resarching, thinking, planning, and designing something that could then be made in the shop. That mindset treated the work of actually making the item strictly as interchangable labor. Now I am well into an engineering career and have gained an apreciation for activities that don’t require computers and instead require attention and presence in a physical space.
Plans and parts for a set of chopstick cases I made for my wife, back when she was my girlfriend. 2014.
A recent snap shot of my tiny messy shop. It is located in a hallway of sorts, between two sliding doors that separate the backyard from the rest of the house. Despite the modest size, it is enough. I have turned out numerous small objects in the last year for my friends and family.
