My first dainaoshi kanna
I finally got my first dainaoshi kanna, also known as a standing plane. This small wooden bodied plane has the iron bedded at a 90 degree angle. There are some variations in these planes, where the angle is more or less than 90 degrees, the blade is skewed, or the blade is flush on one side like a rebate plane.
What I purchased is nothing fancy, I bought it on ebay used and didn’t expect a whole lot. What I received was perplexing. The bottom of the plane had significant signs of use, but the plane showed little evidence of proper adjustements having been made. The blade was tight side to side (and showed evidence of having been ground at some point?) and the ears appear to have never been trimmed.
After some work establishing a flat bevel, trimming the ears to fit the mouth and slightly releving the width I was able to take my first shavings.
Now I wish I bought one sooner! This plane makes the work of tuning the bottom of other wooden planes so much more enjoyable.
